What to enter

A formula in Fathom (except for a filter) is simply the right side of your equation or function. The left side is already entered for you in the formula prompt area. So if you want speed = distance/time, open the formula for speed and enter distance/time, as shown.

The keyboard

You can enter your formula on the keyboard if you wish; what you type goes right into the formula pane. See Keyboard Shortcuts for details.

Title bar

The title bar describes what you are writing a formula for; in this case, the attribute speed. Drag the bar to move the editor around in the document.

Formula pane

You enter your formula here. You can enter it by typing, clicking on the keypad, and/or double-clicking items in the attribute and function list.

Formula prompt

This is where Fathom writes the left side of the equation.

Font size pop-up

Choose from this pop-up menu to make the formula font bigger or smaller. Your choice will be remembered as a preference.

Resize formula bar

Adjust this bar up or down to give yourself less or more room in the formula pane.

Keypad

Click these buttons to enter numbers and commonly used operators. Hold down the Ctrl (Win) Option (Mac) key to see some additional keypad choices.

Function and attribute pane

This pane lists the attributes and measures available to you as well as the many functions Fathom recognizes. Expand the lists to see the choices. To enter a function or attribute, double-click it. To learn what a function does, select it (single-click) and look in the help pane below.

Here is information on Fathom’s built-in functions: Fathom Operators, Functions, and Units.

Here is information on Fathom’s Special Values.

Buttons

The Cancel button closes the formula editor without applying any changes since the editor was opened or since the Apply button was pressed. Apply makes the current expression in the formula pane take effect. The OK button applies the formula and closes the formula editor window.

Resize help bar

Drag this up or down to make the help pane bigger or smaller.

Help pane

Displays help text for currently selected heading or function in the function and attribute pane.

Resize window

Resize the formula editor to suit your need to have a larger or smaller formula pane, function and attribute pane, or help pane. On Windows, you can resize by dragging the edges or corners of the window. On Mac, drag the lower-right corner of the window.
