Sliders are not required to have numeric values. You can give them string values, too. When you do, the slider’s thumb disappears, and pressing the animation button doesn’t do anything.

Here is a bar chart of people from Ohio showing the metropolitan area from which they come. The slider below the graph is used in a filter for the graph to limit cases to a single state. It is easy to change the state by typing a new value for the slider.
